CBD Basics

Cannabidiol is everywhere these days and in almost anything you can imagine. Many are claiming it to be a miracle cure-all but what is it and does it really do all that some claim it does?

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of more than 100 naturally occurring compounds called cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. While both hemp and marijuana are closely related within the cannabis family, by definition, hemp contains no more than 0.3% of the psychotropic cannabinoid, THC (the stuff that gets you high). E Ola Hawaii’s CBD products are made solely with CBD isolate which contains zero THC.

Why CBD?

While many people claim CBD miraculously cures some types of disease, it does not directly affect biological afflictions directly. In fact, beware of anyone claiming CBD does something that has not been proven through rigorous scientific testing. Because of the many false claims being made as well as substandard or fraudulent CBD products, FDA is closely scrutinizing the industry and rightfully so.

In reality, CBD works with our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which helps to regulate many biological functions such as the immune system, anti-inflammatory responses, anxiety levels, mood and much more. A properly functioning ECS helps to keep your body in homeostasis which is the state of balance or equilibrium in the body necessary for optimal function.

How Does CBD Work?

The ECS is a self-regulating system composed of cannabinoid receptors and endogenous (self-made) compounds known as endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids which are neurotransmitters along with their receptors they are found throughout the body enabling our body’s various cells, organs and systems the ability to communicate with one another. They tell our body’s systems what to do in order to bring it back to homeostasis (balance).

There are two primary endocannabinoid receptors: CB1and CB2. CB1 receptors are found predominantly in the brain and nervous system. CB2 receptors are mainly found in peripheral organs and tissues including cells associated with immune system functions as well as pain management.[1][2]

Modern science has shown that in nearly all pathological or diseased conditions, the endocannabinoid system was not functioning properly. Research suggests that modulating ECS activity holds promise for a broad range of diseases as well as pain management. [3]

Basically, CBD helps to optimize the ECS to help your body heal itself and bring it into homeostasis.

The Legality of CBD

Prior to enactment of The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (commonly referred to as the 2018 Farm Bill), the legality of hemp and hemp derived products such as CBD remained in a state of uncertainty and confusion with different agencies within the government disagreeing on aspects of the cultivation, transportation, sale and even the basic definition of hemp.

The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp and hemp-derived products from the statutory definition of marijuana and the DEA schedule of Controlled Substances as long as it the hemp itself contains less than 0.3% THC. The 2018 Farm Bill also allows the transfer and sale of hemp and hemp-derived products across state lines provided the hemp was lawfully produced under a state or Indian Tribal plan or under a license issued under the USDA plan. As such, CBD is completely legal under Federal law as long as it produced from hemp grown in accordance with a state, Indian or USDA program.
